Bird Advent calendar – Day 5

Day 5 of my count down to Christmas is a special bird that was on F2 this morning at Farmoor reservoir. The Bird is a juvenile Great Northern Diver.

This particular Great Northern Diver is in its first winter coat and the last time someone saw a Great Northern Diver at Farmoor was a year ago in November 2014. It spend quite a lot of time under the water but I didn’t see it come up with anything.

The Great Northern Diver eats fish and crustaceans and arrives at August and leaves to return back to the breeding grounds during April to May. It is normally a coastal bird, but does sometimes come inland.
