Bird Advent calendar -Day 11

Day 11 of my count down to Christmas is a bird that is on the green status on the RSPB website and is quite common in the UK, the Great Spotted Woodpecker or GSW for short.

In my garden I have a male Great Spotted Woodpecker who hangs around the garden all year round but only comes onto the feeders in the Winter. The female is normally out in the front garden but never comes to the feeder. The male Great Spotted Woodpecker loves the fat balls and adores the peanuts. Today I saw him sat on our garden gate in the pouring rain looking up at the feeders.

The difference between a male Great Spotted Woodpecker and a female Great Spotted Woodpecker is that the male has a red crest on the back of it’s head whilst the female doesn’t.

I didn’t know how to tell male and female apart. I’ll look more carefully in future. We have a GSW that visits our garden most days. He (or she!) Makes a loud “peep” sound and I always know where to look. It’s always on the same branch of the same tree.
