Bird Advent calendar – Day 12

This is my second blog today but I didn’t want to miss out a day on my Bird Advent calendar.

The bird for Day 12 is the Jackdaw.

We have lots of Jackdaws around the village, and a ‘clattering’ of Jackdaws around our garden. This is about 8 Jackdaws that appear the moment the feeders are topped up. They first sit on the Silver birch tree and the telephone wires then swoop down knocking the smaller birds off the feeders.

We put out fat balls that have been broken up on a tray on the feeder so the Jackdaws will take from there, leaving the smaller birds to take it from a fat ball holder.

One Jackdaw took a huge chunk of fat ball, all the other Jackdaws chased it doing a variety of ariel display movements whilst swerving around chimney pots chattering at the top of their voices . When the jackdaw landed the others dived bombed it trying to make the Jackdaw drop it.
