As I’m writing this blog, with the windows open, I can hear lawn mowers up and down the street cutting away.
We have decided to join ‘Say No to the Mow‘ during May, although we haven’t actually cut the lawn this year.
I’ve already noticed a few differences in the garden. I hadn’t seen a Greenfinch for the past few years and yet two have visited this week, I’ve noticed Goldfinches pecking at dandelion clocks and as I walk through the grass so many more insects fly or dash out of the way.
Getting close up to take photos reveals the tell-tale signs of daily wildlife stories. Tiny feathers from a predated bird, fox scat left by a nightly visitor, a bumblebee washing, ladybirds in search of aphids, the jackdaws pecking for larvae and tiny flowers that would have gone unnoticed.
I would encourage everyone to leave a patch of lawn unmown, even the smallest patch will create extra habitat for wildlife.

Thanks! I might just do that. Although…he has mowed down those red reflectors you get for your driveway, so we’ll see what I can do that actually works (he has gotten better this year).

I totally agree Alex. All I can hear is mowing!. I have even asked the individuals who own the playing field behind our cottage not to strim the Wildflowers and the reasons why. I got some ridiculous answer back, that they were weeds!. So I have bought some Wild flower seeds and Bee Bombs to scatter behind our fence. Whats wrong with people nowadays don’t they treasure the planet we live on. 😦

I would love to leave more of my lawn unmowed…but my boyfriend won’t have it! Unless I put up signs and place rocks (which I probably will have to do), he mows it down – even if I tell him that the bees are endangered and butterflies love it! Not to mention other bugs and birds too!
